NAATI driver licence translation

If your overseas driver licence is not in English, carry an English translation of it when you drive in Australia; in most states and territories an International Driving Permit from the country that issued your licence works too. Our NAATI Driver Licence translation is made by a NAATI-certified translator, and most states and territories also accept it when you change your licence for an Australian one.

We translate your licence from A$37.50 per licence, not per page, and email it to you in under 24 hours on weekdays.

  • From A$37.50 per licence
  • Under 24 hours on weekdays
  • Delivered by email

What you receive

  • the complete English translation of your licence, made by a NAATI-certified translator, with their NAATI stamp and certification number
  • a PDF by email: print it and carry it together with your licence

The translation goes with your licence; it does not replace it. Always carry both when you drive.

One licence, one file

The price is per licence: each file you upload counts as one licence. Put the front and the back of your licence in one file, as one PDF or one photo showing both sides.

The rules in each state and territory

Every state and territory asks drivers whose licence is not in English to carry an English translation, and most also accept an International Driving Permit. Each one sets which translations it accepts, for driving and for changing your licence for an Australian one:

  • New South Wales: to drive, an English translation or an International Driving Permit. To transfer your licence, Transport for NSW accepts translations only from Multicultural NSW, the Department of Home Affairs and two consulates, not from NAATI translators.
  • Queensland: carry a recognised English translation when you drive and show it to the police with your licence; Queensland points to NAATI's list of approved translators. A NAATI translation is accepted to transfer your licence.
  • Victoria: an English translation, by a NAATI translator or your country's consulate, or an International Driving Permit. A NAATI translation is accepted to convert your licence.
  • Western Australia: carry a translation or an International Driving Permit. Translations by NAATI-certified translators are accepted to transfer your licence.
  • South Australia: an English translation, by a NAATI translator, a consulate or a government translating service, or an International Driving Permit, shown to the police on request. The same translations are accepted to transfer your licence.
  • Tasmania: an International Driving Permit, or an English translation by a person accredited to translate. A translation by a NAATI-certified translator is accepted to convert your licence.
  • Australian Capital Territory: an official English translation, by a NAATI-certified translator, an embassy or consulate, or the Department of Home Affairs, or an International Driving Permit. The same translations are accepted to transfer your licence.
  • Northern Territory: an International Driving Permit, or an official translation by a translator authorised in the Northern Territory.

Questions

Can I drive with the translation alone?

No. Carry the translation together with your original licence: it translates your licence, it does not replace it.

Can I use an International Driving Permit instead?

In most states and territories, yes. The permit has to come from the country that issued your licence, through its motoring association or embassy.

Is the price per page?

No. NAATI Driver Licence is priced per licence: each file you upload counts as one licence, so put both sides of your licence in one file.

How long does it take?

Under 24 hours on weekdays. Weekend and public-holiday exceptions apply.

Which licences can you translate?

Licences in Spanish, Portuguese and Russian, translated into English. For other documents, see NAATI translations.
